Travel By and for Military Families
My love of travel began when I was choosing a college to attend. Ultimately I picked a maritime academy in large part because the curriculum included a summer working cruise each year on the school’s training ship. During my summers in college I traveled throughout South America and the South Pacific Ocean.
During college I met my future husband who ended up become a military pilot and a lot of my travels changed from exploring exotic new places to flights home to visit family from various bases throughout the Southern US. It wasn’t until we had been married 7 years that we realized we had never been on a real vacation. We had been places, but not for leisure. So we planned a real vacation for ourselves, not one to fly home to Southern California. It’s funny that the expectation is for the military family to travel home most of the time.
We started prioritizing our own vacations to places WE want to go and invited people we want to see to go with us. In 2018 we took our almost 2 year old daughter and met up with college friends and their kid for a 2 week Mediterranean cruise out of Barcelona. In 2022 my mother in law treated her family to a Caribbean cruise. And in 2023 my family took a month long trip through Australia, Bali, and Singapore.
Now we are preparing to relocate our family overseas and my 2024 goal is to travel somewhere once month. It doesn’t have to be a luxury trip every time, but a mini vacation once a month is my goal, and being propositioned in Europe will certainly help. Travel is a mindset much like your attitude about a new duty station. If we can only afford a day trip to see something new, that counts.
And through all this I wanted to make it easier for other military families to be able to prioritize their own travels. I want to connect them with military discounts, credit card partners that offer good value, creating itineraries that remove the work of planning, or even just a little inspiration with destination guides. I want to help military families find the rest and relaxation they deserve.
